A Dull Hum...

So we're back. Have been for a little while now, got home on the 6th but it's kind of taken me this long to get my bearings I think. It was a whirlwind tour back to ye old home town, which we knew it would be, but it was great to see all friends and family. And some of the things that I've missed, most of which was landscape, which is kind of weird. It's amazing how emblazoned on the mind one's surrounding environment can become, how it seeps into the blood and becomes part of your make up. I hadn't realized how much I craved seeing the seemingly endless fields, the criss-cross of country back roads, the winding rivers of my home until I was actually there, taking it all in again after a very long absence. Follow me, I'll take you on a brief tour.

First up, six lane highways. Ahhh, I miss driving in Ontario. Speed; 120 km/h and we were still being passed like we were going backwards. Gotta love it.

This delightful sight I passed every morning on my drive from my in-laws place to my mom's place for coffee. Had to stop and take a photo. Both my husband and I are from the same area, deep in the heart of farm land and the crops were just out of control. We'd never seen them so full or lush. Case in point...

...the corn. The saying goes 'Knee high by the forth of July'. The constable, just for some perspective, is six foot two. So I think it should be more like 'Freakishly high by the end of July'. We just could not get over how tall the fields were the whole time we were there. Neither of us could remember, in all of our growing up years, a year when it had been that high. And yes, it was quite tasty. My goal in going home was to fill up on corn, tomatoes, and peaches, cuz they just aren't the same anywhere else. Mission accomplished.

A farm. And train tracks. Boring yes, but I kinda miss them both.

The St. Clair river. My in-laws live along this river, which is really quite beautiful I think. Lots of boat traffic, mostly great lakes freighters which are pretty cool to watch. The side I'm standing on; the great province of Ontario. The other side; the great state of Michigan. Yeah, that far south. And so many great radio stations on either side. So many. *sigh* Miss that a great deal as well.

So it was a little nostalgic and I tried to soak up as much as I could before returning to the peaceful tranquility that is the east coast (not to mention the fresh air...the central air back in Ontario really threw me for a loop...must be rather spoiled out here).

I hardly knit at all while we were gone and what I did knit I'm not that crazy about. I did manage to finish one sock of a pair and I just think the colour is awful. But I'll take a pic at some point and post. For now though, I'm trying to bleed this holiday time dry, as it's becoming increasingly difficult to find excuses to keep napping and putting off housework. Blame it on the dog days.

Anyhoo, looking forward to getting back into the swing of knitting and blogging again as autumn quickly approaches. I've got lots of projects in the hopper (well, at least in my mind). More on that in another post.

Until later...

Your post reminded me of when I moved back to this area (already 3 years ago!) Returning to this area made me realize that I had missed things that I didn't think was possible - early morning fog, ducks and birds everywhere, and corn. BTW the fields really are spectacular this year.

That was one thing I enjoyed on my cross-Canada trip last year -- all the fields of sunflowers, corn, hay... Maybe I'll get to do it again sometime.

Welcome home! Bet Hank was happy to see you.

Wow. That's some seriously tall corn.

I wonder, what would a baby-corn farms look like in comparison? heh heh.
